I believe going into the field of medicine to become a Surgeon is a true calling. I was driven to pursue this field of study from a young age due to my interest in humanity, the hard sciences and helping individuals in pain. I find surgery to be a very rewarding career as I have the opportunity to genuinely help human beings every day by lessening their pain and suffering. I sincerely hope each and every patient walks away from every interaction with me knowing I care and they matter. I am genuinely interested in the health and well-being of my patients and strive to provide the best quality care, professionalism and bedside manner. As a surgeon, I am most proud of having completed over 1,500 surgeries, with excellent patient approval and outcomes. I stay up to date on all the latest medical innovations by attending conferences, obtaining certification in new innovative technologies and by attending new equipment training programs. It is important to me to provide the most modern and advanced medical care available for my patients. The biggest influence in my career is my mentor Dr. Philip Schauer, MD, Professor of Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine. Dr. Schauer’s training and mentoring provided me the ability to continue to learn, write and research in my areas of surgical interest. This is an opportunity for which I am forever grateful.
As I reflect upon my life, it becomes obvious that a career in Nursing was inevitable. As a child, I found great reward in caring for other children and animals. I am a wife and mother of four children whom I greatly adore. My educational background includes a Bachelor in Psychology completed at Old Dominion University and a Bachelor in Nursing obtained through Marymount University. I have over 20 years’ experience as a practicing RN and 15 of those years have been spent with Virginia Surgery Associates, PC. Throughout my career, I have become acutely aware of the journey and potential struggles faced by patients during the surgical experience. It is my pleasure to facilitate patient care; providing patient education and navigation in an effort to decrease patient anxiety and improve the surgical experience.
In February of 2017 I began a new position in the medical field with Virginia Surgery Associates as an Appointment Coordinator. I then transitioned into additional roles as the Portal Coordinator, and a Bariatric Program Coordinator. I have found the medical field to be most rewarding as I have the opportunity to support patients from the initial call through the completion of their surgical journey. I enjoy bringing assurance and ease to all of our patients and ensuring the surgical process is a positive experience. Prior to beginning with Virginia Surgery Associates, I attended classes with Liberty University online focusing in Administration. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my husband, and keeping busy with our four sons. I look forward to continuing to provide the best patient care throughout Northern Virginia as we advance our care specialties.
My background in the medical field began in 2012 working with intellectually disabled individuals and later as a Medical Assistant at an urgent care. After moving to Virginia in 2016, I began my employment with Virginia Surgery Associates where I have gained a variety of clinical and administrative skills and responsibilities. I started my role as a Clinical Assistant which has given me the understanding of pre- and post-operative care and the concerns of patients. I enjoy building a rapport with our patients and making them feel comfortable throughout the entire surgical process. At the end of the day, I feel most gratified knowing that I was able to help guide our patients along their weight loss journey. I graduated from Frostburg State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a certificate in Addiction Counseling. When I am not at work, I enjoy spending time with my husband and daughter, cooking, and crafting.
